Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. Doctors of Chiropractic – often referred to as chiropractors or chiropractic physicians – practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling. The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury.

Lactation Consultants and Infant Feeding Services at Canopy Health

As Lactation Consultants, our role is to understand your unique situation and support you in navigating any challenges you encounter while feeding your baby. We listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and work collaboratively with you to find solutions that best fit your family’s needs. Whether you’re bottle-feeding, supplementing with formula, or expressing human milk, we’re here to help. Recognizing the importance of postpartum support, your therapist will work to nurture and empower you with health-promoting feeding strategies designed to improve your daily routines and help you achieve your goals.

What an Infant Feeding/Lactation Consultation Involves An infant feeding/lactation consultation focuses on assessing and supporting both the parent(s) and the infant. The primary goal is to empower families and their healthcare providers with tailored information and interventions that promote the health and well-being of the dyad (parent and baby).

Occupational Therapists with IBCLC Certification At Canopy Health, we offer appointments with occupational therapists (OTs) with IBCLC certification. The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) certifies lactation consultants who meet its criteria, pass an exam, and continue to meet continuing education requirements.

OT Expertise in Feeding Occupational therapists (OTs) work across the lifespan as part of skilled feeding teams. OTs are highly trained in oral sensory-motor assessment and therapy, positioning, and managing swallowing dysfunction. As pediatric therapists, OTs are developmentally focused and specialize in promoting participation and function.

OTs can also be trained in perinatal mental health and are skilled in promoting health through parents' daily occupations. They consider roles, routines, cognition, emotional health, and individual needs. Feeding your baby is a complex occupation involving both parent(s) and baby, and OTs provide invaluable support.

Collaborative Care and Compassionate Support OTs work with clients to co-create solutions and are committed to providing inclusive, evidence-based, and compassionate care that aligns with the needs of the family and their healthcare providers.

Regulated Medical Professionals OTs are regulated allied health professionals; some extended health care plans may cover their services.

What Occupational Therapists Do

Occupational therapists (OTs) help individuals engage in meaningful
occupations—-activities that people need or want to do—-in a way that
supports their health, well-being, and quality of life. OTs work with
clients to co-create personalized approaches that respect their rights,
needs, preferences, values, abilities, and cultural traditions while
acknowledging inequities in healthcare and society.

What Makes OTs Unique

resources to access, initiate, and sustain participation in valued
activities.
- OTs assess medical and physical limitations and psychosocial factors
that impact a person’s overall health, wellness, and functioning.
- OTs are regulated healthcare professionals in BC and are
university-educated.

The OT Process

Somatic Experiencing (SE) - Trauma Therapy

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a gentle, body-centred approach used for healing symptoms of trauma, chronic stress, and stress-related disorders. My intention is to offer you a welcoming, safe, and compassionate space where you can reconnect with with your body's healing resilience and wisdom. Somatic Experiencing does not require you to re-tell or re-live traumatic events. Instead, it offers you a compassionate space that listens to your body's cues and boundaries, builds its capacity to self-regulate, and gradually release symptoms of trauma and stress.

In an SE session, you will be carefully supported by me, your therapist, to track and feel body sensations in "manageable bite-size pieces". As your nervous system begins to build a felt sense of trust and safety, you start to feel better in your body, build resiliency to stress, and regain a sense of wholeness.

My Practicer Specialty:
* Anxiety,
* PTSD and Early Developmental Trauma,
* Sexual Trauma, Abuse, and Violence.

For those wanting to explore touch therapy, SE Touch can be part of your session. SE Touch can be particularly helpful for Early Shock Trauma, Early Developmental Trauma, and Complex PTSDT. We will discuss and explore this as a possibility together.

Thank you for your Presence...
Together, we care and heal as a community.

Dietetics

Sheryl has been an RMT since 2005, after graduating from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in Vancouver. She worked at a high-end spa in downtown Vancouver for six and a half years, during which time she gained many valuable skills and knowledge. In 2011 she moved to Saskatoon for 4 years where she practiced at a massage therapy clinic, and has been back in Vancouver since the fall of 2015, when she started at Canopy.

Her true passion involves work with women’s health, including painful periods, endometriosis, preconception/fertility, prenatal, and postnatal periods. She utilizes a number of different modalities in her treatments including swedish and petrissage techniques, myofascial release, trigger point release, visceral manipulation, and many others. She understands the need and benefit of relaxation (the majority of all chronic illnesses are triggered by stress in some form), and incorporates elements of this into every treatment she does. Her main goal is always to encourage the body to correct imbalances itself rather than forcing changes.

She has done further training in visceral manipulation – specifically for the female pelvis and the digestive system. She also recently completed training in TMJ treatment and assessment.

She completed training with the International Association of Infant Massage to teach new parents how to massage their babies to enhance bonding and attachment, improve baby’s digestion, improve sleep, and encourage relaxation (both for the baby and the parents!).

Alyssa’s Background and Approach

Alyssa graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy (UBC, 2005) and a Master’s Degree in Rehabilitation (UBC, 2008). She has extensive experience as an OT in pediatric feeding, Developmental Coordination Disorder, and the CO-OP approach. In addition, Alyssa is an internationally board-certified lactation consultant and a trained perinatal mental health provider.

Throughout her career, Alyssa has participated in numerous volunteer and paid opportunities, continually seeking formal supervision and ongoing professional development. She has presented at national and international conferences on the role of occupational therapy in perinatal health and lactation consulting and contributed to published literature. Alyssa is also a Clinical Instructor at the UBC Faculty of Medicine School of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy.

Alyssa’s Philosophy

Alyssa recognizes that parents navigate significant shifts in their roles and well-being during this transitionary life stage. She believes that how you feel while engaging in your daily activities matters. New parents, in particular, thrive with connection, community, and hands-on support.

Alyssa emphasizes that seeking help during this stage is normal and doesn’t mean you are failing as a parent. It’s about getting the support you need when things get tough and recognizing that all parents learn as they go. You don’t have to face these challenges alone. By reaching out to others and exploring resources, you can discover strategies that work for you and your family to live well.

Alyssa’s Passion for Support

Alyssa is passionate about offering occupational therapy services to support parents and children in feeding difficulties, developmental activities, mental health, executive functioning, and participation in daily occupations.

Alyssa is thrilled to work at Canopy Health alongside a team of providers, fostering collaboration and continuity of care for families.

Outside of Work

When not supporting clients, Alyssa is an active youth sports volunteer. With three kids at home, she spends much time chauffeuring them around the North Shore but also enjoys spending quality outdoor time with her family and friends.

UPDATE: Fee Increase August 1st

As of August 1st Miral will be increasing her rates to better reflect current Physiotherapy rates in the community

Miral grew up in Toronto and completed her master’s in Physical Therapy at Queen’s University in 2012. Her career and family have taken her from Toronto to the United States for several years and finally back to Canada to plant her roots in North Vancouver.

Miral began her career treating general orthopedic conditions and has taken several courses in advanced manual therapy and contemporary medical acupuncture. In 2014 Miral began extensive training in pelvic health and continues to advance her knowledge in the field today. She treats all persons with pelvic floor dysfunction and particularly enjoys working with the prenatal/postpartum population to ensure a healthy pelvic floor and core before and after birth. Miral has 2 children of her own, one born without any medical intervention, and the other born via caesarean. Miral feels having gone through these experiences herself has allowed her to better understand the variations with birth as well as relate to the physical and mental challenges of a new mom.

Miral’s treatment style includes a combination of manual therapy, exercise therapy, and most importantly, patient education. In addition to working with clients, Miral is often doing free in-services in her community related to pelvic health. With 30 years in the field of health care and wellbeing, I am grateful to witness daily how our whole body can heal and thrive again. My intention is to offer you a trauma-informed and culturally sensitive space where I can witness your unique lived experience with compassion, humility, and respect. Your safety and trust are built patiently with choices, collaboration, and curiosity, with your physical, emotional, mental, cultural, and spiritual health honoured.

I offer you 2 distinct types of “somatic” or body-oriented therapy: CARE- Stress and Trauma-Informed Massage Therapy and Somatic Experiencing Trauma Therapy. Each invites you to a welcoming, safe, and compassionate space where you can slow your mind, feel your body, and connect with its resilience and wisdom. You are encouraged to listen to your body’s unique cues and recognize how that awareness plays an integral role in your health and wellbeing. I weave together the teachings of wise body-centred traditions with the expanding field of neuroscience to bring an integrated, whole-body approach to learning, healing, and being in connection with our body.

In practice, and in the community, I am a passionate advocate for supporting the voice, choice and healing of children, and adults who have been impacted by sexual violence, abuse, and trauma. Growing and healing in relationship with Indigenous Peoples is important and meaningful both for me both personally and professionally. I am committed to supporting the wellbeing, and care of all people with outward action that reflects the values I hold inside.

Lastly, I celebrate the wise teacher and healer alive in all of us! Thank you for your presence, and the unique gift your offer. Together, we care and heal as a community.
